How Do I Upload My Website Via FTP?Awesome! You’ve got a website built and now it’s time to get it online and working for you! Uploading the website via FTP is generally a straight forward process, depending on the site you have built. For the sake of this article, we are going to assume you have a straightforward HTML/CSS website.
Note: If you have a CMS website (Wordpress, Magento etc) you may need to contact your Web Developer or Hosting provider.
To upload the site you will need what’s referred to as an “FTP Client”. Filezilla is generally the best and most reliable. It is a free download on any computer – a Google search will take you to their site where you can download it.
Below are instructions on how to upload your website via FTP (Filezilla). You can also upload the files through the control panel, but that is much slower:
1. Make sure you have your control panel username and login. If you do not have these credentials, please contact your hosting provider.
2. Open FileZilla
3. In the host box (top left), enter your website domain or I.P address.
4. In the username box. Enter the Username from your Hosting Account
5. In the password box. Enter the Password from your Hosting Account
6. Click 'Quick Connect'
Note: FileZilla will log you into the server. If you are successful, it will show you a directory listings. If you are unsuccessful, it will prompt in the conection box. Please double check your host name, username and password.
Note: The left hand side shows your local files on your computer and the right hand side shows the files on the hosting server
7. On the right hand side double, click on the www folder. This is where you will upload your website files
8. Once you have located your website files on your computer (using the left hand pane), click and select all the website files and folders that you would like to upload
9. Right click the highlighted files and select the Upload option, or alternatively, click and drag the highlighted files into the www folder
Note: If there is a file on the hosting server with the same name as a file that you are uploading, it will prompt you to overwrite the old file with the new file you are uploading - click the OK button if this appears
While your website files are uploading to the hosting server, you will be able to see the upload progress in the bottommost window pane in FileZilla
Uploading content using the Control Panel
To upload your content via the Control Panel, please refer to the below instructions:
1. Log into your Control Panel via your-domain.com.au/cpanel.
2. Once you have successfully logged into your Control Panel, under the 'Files' section (generally at the top), click on 'File Manager'.
3. In the directory, locate and click www.
Note: All web files should be uploaded into this directory.
4. Along the top menu, click 'Upload'.
5. Click the 'Select Files' button. This will open a pop up box where you can see all the files on your hard disk.
6. Browse your hard disk and locate the file you wish to upload and click Open.
Note: You can only update one file at a time using the Control Panel. Using this method is not advisable if you have lots of files to upload. An FTP program can upload your files simultaneously.
